2019 PCD Concussion Education Series
organized by Aileen Martin, Community Consultant
Lumsden, Watrous, Wynyard, St.Brieux from September- November 2019
Community Host/Partner- Lumsden Rec, Watrous Rec, Wynyard High School, St.Brieux Library
We had an exciting and educational fall in conjunction with the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan! We hosted a series of Concussion Education Sessions in the communities of Lumsden, Watrous, Wynyard and St.Brieux! Thank you for your support and partnership as without it these education sessions would never have come to fruition!
Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death, hospitalization, and disability among Canadians. And of these, concussions are among the most common.
Facilitators from the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Saskatchewan came to our communities full of energy, information, expertise and first-hand knowledge in the area of concussions and brain injury. They spoke about the signs and symptoms of concussions, treatments and reviewed some of the return to school/return to play guidelines.
In total we had 43 participants from nine different Prairie Central communities!
100% of attendees would recommend a workshop like this to others. The only negative comment common in all communities was that participants wished more people could/would have been in attendance! A couple other notable comments were:
“The workshop was incredible, as a parent of a couple sporty kids – I am so glad I attended. Knowledge is power.”
“When in doubt, pull them out. It is ok to be the bad guy.”
Thank you again to all who attended these sessions.
